Remember the Titans (2000)

Oh, wow, this movie is great! Many years removed from our last viewings, we watched Remember the Titans last night for the first time together, and it was just the Feel Good medicine that we needed to help us start the last quarter of 2020. Denzel is intense but lovable, the kids outpace the adults in their ability to eliminate racism on their team (except for that loser Ray who gets kicked off the team), and nearly every character has the chance to redeem themselves from earlier mistakes, which just piles on the good emotions. The roller coaster of terrible events and tragedies, followed by new heights of growth and togetherness kept us engages and teary throughout the movie, even though we were hours past our bedtimes. It’s amazing to us that this movie took place in 1970, was made in 2000, and yet we still suffer from some of the same hate and ignorance featured in the low points of the film. How is it possible that we have not made progress like this team? We need this movie in 2020, we need every American to watch this movie and try to be half as good as these players and coaches, and maybe, just maybe, we have a shot of truly moving forward.
