I Am Woman (2019)

We first saw the teaser on Netflix for I Am Woman a few months ago and instantly added it to our list, but it was relegated due to the holidays and a few other series we had queued up. Knowing nothing about Helen Reddy before going in, we were instantly intrigued and hooked on the story, which has ups and downs for sure.

Helen was a strong character that was easy to root for, even when she made some mistakes in her personal relationships, and it was just heartbreaking to see her in an emotionally abusive marriage while writing these empowering anthems.

The movie ended with an emotional performance at a NOW rally in DC, and it was the perfect, feel good, emotional ending to the film. It turns out that Helen did a lot more with her life after her music career, but the movie ends with this highlight moment which left us both teary. Adding to the emotional end were the notes in the credits, especially that Helen’s granddaughter had performed in the movie, a moment early on that we loved even before knowing the extra twist.

Also, Helen Reddy passed away in September of 2020, but not before viewing the movie, which was based on her own memoir published in 2006.
