Stargirl (2020)

Grace VanderWaal is Stargirl, and she inspired the characters and the audience to dream big, do better, and find ourselves in this cute teenage story. From the perspective of a introverted “Michael Cera” type teenager, we see Stargirl enter public schools for the first time and immediately change the course of life in this small Arizona town.

While the love story didn’t pan out the way it would have in a rom-com, the characters learn to love themselves and others on a new level, and Stargirl helps lead people past the pain they’ve been holding on to, and disrupts the teen cycle of blending in to make sure they don’t stand out.

The movie was fun, Stargirl’s music was uplifting, and we felt good about life after it ended. But, the best part was learning about Grace VanderWaal and discovering her music, as we had not seen her win America’s Got Talent nor heard any of her music. I highly recommend starting with this three song clip, where she channels Stargirl in her star dress.

Overall, this movie hits a lot of the criteria for a feel good movie, even with an indie type ending, which really leaves you wanting more and left one of the reviewers craving a little more love story.
