Nappily Ever After (2018)

When Netflix said this was a 57% match for us, I knew that their algorithm was missing something. This movie fit us perfectly, as the main character Violet grows throughout the movie after EPICLY hitting rock bottom at the end of a drunken escapade. Her new love interest has the cutest young girl, and the theme of the movie promotes empowerment and finding yourself instead of fitting in and living up to other’s expectations.

Based on the Nappily series of books by Trish R. Thomas, the movie uses hair as a theme for everything, from the childhood even that scarred and shaped Violet’s life, to the way each act of the movie is introduced by referring to her hair style or length. Violet finally realizes how trapped she had been by her hair (and the whole image she had created for herself) and remarks that she has so much more time in her life now that she’s not doing, and worrying about, her hair all the time.

SPOILER: The main disappointment in the film was that there was no successful romance at the end, but the character transformation and empowerment was enough to leave us satisfied and feeling good. Also, that botanical garden in Atlanta that they visited in the middle of the movie was incredible.

Feel Good Rating: 7.0
