Love Happens (2009)

We queued up a few movies on Amazon Prime without doing much homework on them, but with a name like Love Happens, what could go wrong? Well, the movie was not great, but we did have fun watching it and a few scenes moved us. Aaron Eckhart stars as Burke, an author and motivational speaker, who is hiding his true self and a big secret, and Jennifer Aniston is a Seattle florist who helps him get past this obstacle in his life, though her first instinct at their initial meeting was to pretend she was deaf to avoid talking to him.

Two scenes that stuck with us were the first date that Eloise brought Burke on, which was a sold out concert. They had to pick up a neighbor’s bucket truck on the way, and she took him up over the stadium wall to enjoy the free view. Ridiculous but cute. Later, we find Burke rifling through Eloise’s stuff at her shop while she works, and he finds copies of notes that she kept from memorable bouquets. The notes are very cute and you find out that Eloise is the sentimental sort, and it helps push Burke to make the changes he needs to make.

Altogether, the movie was ok (the reviews always mention a lack of chemistry between the couple, which we felt as well), the feel goods were decent, and there were enough cute and unique components to the story for us to enjoy it. Was this movie better than a Hallmark movie? I think so, it at least felt a smidge closer to real life, but not much, but that isn’t what matters. Since we are suckers for love stories and happy endings, regardless of anything else that goes on, we were plenty happy at the end which is all that matters.

Feel Good Rating: 6.6
