King Richard (2021)

Although tennis fascinates me, we are not a tennis household and were not familiar with the backstory of Serena and Venus Williams, so it was fascinating to watch Will Smith portray the father who will let nothing interfere with his plan for success.

All of the girls were great, they were devoted to family and success, and were taught to have fun while competing, an important lesson that seems to be forgotten by some professionals. As Venus and Serena grew and moved up in the tennis world the family moved with them, which was heartwarming to watch.

King William is a demanding father, and everything must go according to his plan, which of course can stress the family and everyone around them. The scene where the girl’s mother, Brandy, confronts William and convinces him to let the girls play was fantastic.

The movie ends way too early in the story of Venus and Serena, but it captures some of the adversity they faced as a family just to get to the start of their professional careers, and highlights the fanatical commitment of their father has he pushed everyone around him to fulfill his plan, and King William ends up on top at the end.

Feel Good Rating: 7.8
