The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021)

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things was a nice feeling teenage coming of age story, presented with a Groundhog Day style premise, with a sad twist but uplifting finish. We tend to enjoy these movies where a self deprecating character falls for someone who is not interested, and just keeps coming back until love wins out and they get together. The journey is always the best part, when the character messes up, learns and grows, and usually has a grand romantic gesture.

Our hero Mark suffers through an endless repetition of days until Margaret shows up, like a blip in the matrix, and sets the plot in motion. The film uses a couple of features alongside the main plot to keep things interesting, like Henry’s progress with his video game and the search for the lost dog, and the mystery of where our heroine goes every night.

We’ve seen better movies but this one kept us interested and was enjoyable and uplifting, and served as a reminder that we might want to pause time to hold on to a moment, or avoid what is coming next, but if we remember to live in every moment, cherish their memories, and plan for the next one, to build relationships that have meaning and work to grow them, we will live a fulfilling life and have the support we need to get through life’s troubles.
