Netflix’s new film takes us back to 1999 and doesn’t disappoint with its soundtrack, Y2K mania and a heartfelt story with a happy ending. Beverly’s parents died when she was two, and her grandmother Gail doesn’t like to talk about them, so when Bev finds a window into their lives in a mixtape, she tries to follow the musical clues to their lives.
Bev makes a couple of friends along the way, including the reluctantly helpful record store owner, and predictably learns as much about herself as her parents. Along the way she also finds a way to help her grandmother , who never really dealt with the loss of her daughter.
The last song on the mixtape ends up being the most meaningful, and brings Beverly and her grandmother together on a new level, and Bev begins a new chapter of her life with new friends and a new understanding of who she is.
